“For St. Benedict…study is ranked as one means,
within a framework of others, to the end, which is eternal life.”
-Jean Leclercq, OSB, The Desire for Learning and the Love of God
“St. Benedict….found the world, physical and social,
in ruins, and his mission was to restore it.”
-Blessed John Henry Newman, “The Mission of Saint Benedict”
St. Benedict inherited a world in chaos. He sought to bring the light of Christ into his life, and into the lives of his brother monks. Through work, prayer, and study, St. Benedict ordered his soul — and the entire Western world — toward Christ.
The Portsmouth Institute provides opportunities for students, teachers, and lifelong learners to explore the rich heritage of Catholic thought, so that — in the spirit of St. Benedict — we may “quietly, patiently, gradually” restore Christian culture in our modern age.
