DESCRIPTION

2020-2021 Science and Spirituality Lecture Series:

On Creation and Contemplation

Programming made possible through an anonymous grant facilitated by John Forstmann ’60

The 2020-2021 Science and Spirituality Lecture Series on Creation and Contemplation is an initiative of the Portsmouth Institute’s Center for Science and the Liberal Arts, whose mission is to inspire the knowledge of and a sense of wonder towards God and the created order. The series is made possible through an anonymous grant facilitated by John Forstmann ’60. The Center is co-sponsored by the Department of Science at Portsmouth Abbey School.

The 2020-2021 Science and Spirituality Lecture Series will be centered on the theme “Creation and Contemplation.” Each program will offer an encounter with God and the created order that not only informs, but inspires. By doing so, we will enliven the intellectual and spiritual lives of our community.

The Fall Term will set the stage through a series of virtual lectures exploring the complementarity of science and spirituality. The Winter Term will then explore how science not only complements, but indeed serves the spiritual life. Finally, the Spring Term will offer real-life encounters with creation that move the soul and demonstrate at a deep level the connection between science and spirituality.

As part of our initiative, we are proud to partner with the McGrath Institute for Church Life at the University of Notre Dame in offering an encounter with science and spirituality to students, faculty, alumni, and parents this fall.

All Portsmouth Abbey students are invited to join for an upcoming webinar on “Care for Creation” by Sister Ilia Delio, OSF, Ph.D. The event will take place on Friday, February 12th at 7:00pm ET via Zoom.
