“In case of discord, make peace before the setting of the sun.”

 – The Rule of St. Benedict, Ch. IV

Let us, then, pray with all fervor for this peace which our divine Redeemer came to bring us. May He banish from the souls of men whatever might endanger peace. May He transform all men into witnesses of truth, justice and brotherly love. May He illumine with His light the minds of rulers, so that…they may also guarantee them the fairest gift of peace.”

 – Pope John XXIII, Pacem in Terris

The imperative of peace—“the tranquility of order,” according to St. Augustine—is central to the Christian life, and to the mission of the pilgrim Church on earth. Yet for much of the world, including as a result of the recent conflicts which have emerged in places like Ukraine and Israel, war subverts peace and undermines man’s participation in the divine order.
How are we to understand the diplomatic mission of the Holy See in an age of conflict? What role can the Vatican play in ensuring peace? How does the diplomacy of the Holy See serve its evangelical mission? Please join the Portsmouth Insitute and experts in Vatican diplomacy to explore these questions and more at our upcoming Providence Catholicism & Culture Symposium.

The Portsmouth Institute welcomes individuals and organizations dedicated to advancing Catholic thought in contemporary culture to partner with us as sponsors of the 2024 Providence Catholicism & Culture Symposium. Those interested can email Executive Director Chris Fisher at
