The Portsmouth Institute for Faith and Culture cordially invites you to join us as we kick off the summer with our sixth Summer Conference, “Like a Shepherd He Will Tend His Flock: Understanding the Francis Papacy,” on June 19-21, 2015. Following the Benedictine tradition of intellectual dialogue and spiritual formation, the Summer Conference presents the best of contemporary scholarship on faith and culture, and provides opportunities for all attendees to experience the rich, prayerful life of a Benedictine monastery.

Hosted at Portsmouth Abbey, a Benedictine monastery and school located on the banks of the Narragansett Bay in scenic Rhode Island, the conference will foster an authentic understanding of Pope Francis and will explore the major themes of his papacy. We invite you to seek answers to a number of important questions regarding the Pope Francis, including:

–Who is Pope Francis? How does his background — as an Argentinian, a Jesuit, a pastor — motivate his own faith and mission?

–How should the Holy Father’s teachings on economics and the “throwaway culture” influence American social and economic policy?

–What are the main challenges confronting the Church at this point in history, and how is Pope Francis confronting them?

–How does Pope Francis encourage us to live out the fundamental doctrines of the Church?

–How should we understand Pope Francis’s reformational zeal within the context of Church history?

“This I ask you: Be shepherds, with the ‘odor of the sheep,’ make it real, as shepherds among your flock, fishers of men.”
–Pope Francis Chrism Mass, March 28, 2013.
